Memories by Martin Crawford-Phillips

Thank you for your email and for sharing with us Mervyn’s life story and your tribute to him. He was indeed fortunate to have such a caring and supportive family during his very challenging life, which he managed with such courage and stoicism. It was very nostalgic to see the photo of Mervyn playing the saxophone in the band we formed at Bristol University, where we both had many happy times. He was amazingly talented and so versatile. As a classical musician, he produced such a beautiful sound on his oboe and we played together in concerts on several occasions. At my sister’s wedding, he delighted us with a very moving performance of Bach’s Jesu Joy of Man’s Desiring during the signing of the register - a real tour de force!  Happy memories indeed.
